SD vs SSD

Hi I have an x86 platform running WinCE and am trying to determine what non volatile storage device to use.

In particular I am trying to determine whether to go with a SD card solution or a Solid State Drive (SSD).

Since both are essentially different technologies, my understanding is that even if the advertised read/write rates are the same for a SD card and a SSD, their characteristics in the system will be different.

What I am interested in is to determine which would be a better choice from a performance perspective?

Any pointers/suggestions from past experience would be helpful

Thanks Shani

If the cost/size is not an issue and the removable media is not required, then SSD is superior to SD card in every respect.

Not really. They're typically just different interfaces to the same technology. Both SD and SSD are (usually) flash memory exported to the outside world as a block-oriented storage device. In other words, they're flash disks.

That's quite impossible to say, given you didn't say what kind of performance you're intersted in: read or write speed? Peak or sustained speed? Access time? Available overall size?

In terms of speed (especially over lifetime) a lot ends up being not just the native speed of the flash devices, but how they are managed. A device like an SSD with a number of chips well managed can achieve a higher bandwidth than one or two of those chips as in an SD card... or especially any collection of memory badly managed... Some of the early SSDs suffered from such bad management, slowing over time.

Pragmatically? I'd try it out with a cheap SD card or USB stick... if it's fast enough, great, if not go for the more expensive solution.
