My recommendation: go for some Cortex M- series based stuff. Look at LPCxpresso ecosphere or Keil RDBM1768) LPCxpresso is probably the most user-friendly environment.

.That's not always possible. We just have a customer requirement to build an Atmega88 @ 32KHz with 15uA at 1.8V. Can't do it with an 32 bitter. Can't say no to the customer. Have to be flexible.
