why sms is only 160 characters?

Because 160 = 2^5 * 5. "SMS" actually stands for "Salute Master Satan" and the 5's refer to the Pentagram of Evil. The 2, obviously, is in reference to Zorastrian Duality.
No, wait... Halloween isn't for another three days. Never mind...

simple.... so they can charge you more since everybody uses more as 160
