Why is a Theremin volume antenna a loop?

Does anyone know why the volume antenna on a Theremin is nearly always a loop? Wouldn't a horizontal straight bar work as well?

All I've seen and worked on used rods. They just need to be a configuration that works well for the artist playing it.
