There must be someone restoring one of these? I was searching to see if I could find one I could get a ride on... no luck.

I keep a big ugly Sears transformer-rectifier supply around for the same reason. Car batteries can take a lot of punishment.

Starter batteries have very thin plates, for more surface area. Deep discharging them warps the plates. Once they short it's all over. "Marine" batteries have a thicker plate so can take a deeper discharge, with the trade-off of area/capacity.
