I was just wondering(as always ;) whats wrong with using a voltage doubler recifier circuit? (i.e., where you use 2 diodes from the tranformer to double the voltage)
like I have a 25VCT transformer and it would be nice if I could double that and use a variable regulator to get me a larger range but I feel that there is something about the doublers and so on that I don't know about... The only "hint" I have read is that they are mainly used to supply pulses such as in photo flashes and such... (hence implying that they shouldn't be used continuously?)
Obviously it changes the ratings of things up and stuff(have to use larger filter caps and worry about increased power dissipation and things like that)?
My gut feeling is that the ripple is probably doubled too(hence for, say, a quadrupler it would take time to recharge the caps hence a big dip).
Just for fun, could I use like a 20x to get the voltage real high if I had the diodes and caps that could handle those voltages to, say, make a big spark? ;)
