I was at the gym the other day, there was a girl doing that shimmy thing, with a hula hoop. I haven't seen one of those in a long long time...
And I got to wondering... what holds it up?
Where's Newton when we need him?

Her curves and centrifugal force, young man. Mostly her curves. They work magic, particularly in holding things up.
Cheers Chris
A hula hoop can be thought of as a rock on a string. The center of mass of the hula hoop corresponds with the rock. Where your body makes contact with the hoop corresponds with where your hand holds the string.

The key is joint flexibility. All the vertebrae have to be able to bend freely in all directions. This is everyone's condition until our 20's when we start picking things up.I was so stiff in my 30's I could hardly walk at times. CHANGE OF DIET TO STRICT VEGAN works wonders. Now I can hula-hoop and move my trunk freely and without pain. It's wonderfully convenient for things like retrieving items and seeing what time it is.

When the hoop is swinging around a post, it pulls against the side of the post. That provides a friction force that keeps it from sliding down. This is the inside out version of what holds a motorcycle up as it is driven around the inside of a big barrel. The trick is to move the post in a way that not only keeps the swing going, but angle the post enough to cause the hoop to climb up the post a little each cycle, to compensate for the inevitable downward slip. But, with practice, you can swing a hula hoop around a broomstick, so hips, though useful, are not necessary.
Does that mean you only eat stuff that's imported from the Vega system?
Cheers! Rich
How about gyro action that defies gravity. How about girls hips How about friction,or all of the above. Sandra "Sunbeam".
No, here.
(Chimpunks:) Want a plane that loops the loop, (Alvin:)I still want a Hula-Hoop. (Chimpunks:) We can hardly stand the wait, Please Christmas don't be late. We can hardly stand the wait, Please Christmas don't be late.
