cellphone vibration detection?

No, I'm not looking to set off bombs, but I was wondering if I could redesign this ridiculous thing:

right now, I watch for the display lighting up so I can get notified there is an incoming call (and judging from the mail I get, there is apparently a fair sized demand for a product like this, but I still haven't seen a commercial version).

I see cheap little vibration sensor "chips" out there. What are the odds one could be used to detect the kind of vibration a vibrating cellphone produces, but ignore most other normal activities (like picking it up and putting it down?).

Just curious if I could continue the rube goldberg design philosophy with a mark III detector someday?
