All Magnetic Self Centering Bearings

Is it possible to make a bearing out of a ring magnet and a smaller magnet held above above the center of the ring by NS SN or SN NS repulsion?

The smaller magnet could be prevented from flipping with a non magnetic "keel" or rod hanging from the bottom of the small magnet and dropping through the hole.

Will the flux from the ring ever have self centering effect?

I saw a little flying-saucer thing that did exactly this - there was a plastic sheet sitting on top of the magnet, and the armature was a little spinning top:

---------------------------- NNNNN NNNNN

You'd spin the top up - they sold this toy with a little flashlight- sized spinner unit - then raise the plastic thing, and at one point, the little top would subtly rise up off the plastic, and sit and float there until air friction slowed it down, when it just flopped over, fell down, and sat there.

I'd like to combine one of these with a rotating field of some kind, and have it run like that as long as the batteries were good. :-)

Mechanical (rotating disc) electric meters usually have magnetic suspension bearings. The magnets support most of the weight of the disc, and the central shaft just touches gently and loosely into sleeve guides to provide stability. Very low friction. Introduced in

1948, I think.

There are refrigeration compressors on the market now using "magnetic bearings".......
