worst case is they explode, in your circuit there probably wasn't much damage done to the capacitor,

could be... I couldn't see in your circuit which way round you had the chip or the battery.

but they don't last real long like that, they'll burn out if you over-drive them.

in that case atleast one of them is backwards, or faulty.

disconnect the wire to pin three and both lids should light. if not reverse one or both of them, and/or try a new battery until the both light up.

then connect the wire (that was going to pin3) to the positive and check that the bottom LED lights then try it on negative abd see that the top led lights, then hook it bac to pin3 and try again.

I thought we were talking standard parts here.

But if a cmos part only takes a total of 100 microamps to work, the total divider string would have to be greater than 50K.

Maxim: http://datasheets.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/ICM7555-ICM7556.pdf shows their divider to be 300k +/- 20% and the total supply current to be 125µA max at 25C with a 5V supply.

I was wrong.

I dowloaded (and saved this time) a few datasheets after posting that. the bipolar oness all seem to use 5K resistors in their chain the NS cmos version uses 100K so I was out by 2 orders of magnitude even there.
