Zara effect (!?)

Apr 03, 2006 5 Replies

On my wanderings through sci.physics ("Why are Asians so good at math") I came across the name of a Filipino inventor (Gregorio Zara, do a Google search on him sometime) who apparently has several interesting inventions attributed to him.

One of these is the "Zara Effect" (the physical law of electrical kinetic resistance).

So, I was curious to see what the Zara Effect really is.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything - Google only seems to list the inventions Mr. Zara invented.

So, what is the Zara Effect, really? It couldn't be something like V=IR, could it ???

Google Scholar fails to find anything under either "Gregorio Zara" or "Zara Effect" --- are you sure you have the correct spelling?

Google Advanced Search finds MIT graduate Gregorio Zara just fine ;-)

Yes, that's right, and it's interesting. Although Gregorio Zara is sometimes described as a scientist, and indeed got a his BS from MIT, masters from U Michigan and physics doctorate from Sorbonne University in 1930, he's perhaps better described as an inventor. Apparently inventors, no matter how accomplished and prolific, do not make much of an impact on the scientific literature, unless they publish some scientific papers that can be referenced, etc. Timeframe is also a factor; older scientific literature does not have much impact on the modern search-engine databases, unless it continues to be referenced.

Thanks, - Win

Yep. How many published papers can you find by me ?:-)

(They exist, but I wonder if Google/whatever can find...)

Hmm. Silk industry eh? (wikipedia).

Google scholar seems to find some things, but there are many Jim Thompsons, and the short quotes available easily on google don't let you nail down easily which one it was.

I'm sure that's one key to being cited a lot. Have an easily memorizable unique name.
