Video tracking

Sep 15, 2007 4 Replies

Hello,

I know there are web cams that may track my face on its own movements. I also know there are software to guide the telescope using a star as reference point.

What I'd like to know is if there is a software that tracks an image from a web cam and outputs its movements in order to control motors and recenter the image.

Thanks Marco / iw2nzm

Yes, of course. You can write your own if you like. We setup an motorized X-Y gantry for a webcam and wrote software to track worms, well maggots, actually. We illuminated them with a ring of LEDs attached to the camera, and in early tests used red LEDs. This didn't work because the worm would always turn away from the light, and the camera/light would follow, so he/she/it? ended up going around in a continuous circle. Changing to 850nm IR LEDs fixed that problem.

Well, please may you provide some useful links about this concept? Or better, what should I search for? I'm not sure about the right keywords to use.

Thanks Marco / iw2nzm

I can tell you for a start that we used the resources provided by LabView.

Ok, thanks.
