Very small rotary encoder

You wanna play you have to pay! How about 2 hall detectors side by side and a slightly magnetized tooth wheel attached to the shaft near it, sensors to be mounted on the pcb and tooth disc on shaft? You can do a quadrature decode. I guess you make a hole in the PCB so the disk will protrude through it. Sounds cheap enough for me!
