Var. split supply from SLA's

I need to run a power op amp circuit in the field from batteries. I intend on uisng two 12 volt 7.2 AHr sealed lead acid batteries in series with the center as virtual ground.



The rail voltages need to be individually adjustable.



What is the most efficient way to do this without wasting undue battery current, and preferably without IC regulators?



Please note power consumption is about 15 watts. I believe that would be to high for a standard potentiometer voltage divider.



Any ideas?

** Yep - one positive and one negative switching regulator.

Not simple and will involve ICs.

You want to use some type of regulator technology. A linear type regulator will be more efficient than a voltage divider or potentiometer type power source to provide the reduced power supply due to the need of that type circuit having to consume goodly amounts of the power in both the "upper" AND "lower" legs of the divider. A small switcher type supply will be way more efficient than the linear type regulator.
