Uses for old TVs?

Many mostly-tube and partially-tube color TVs have a high voltage shunt regulator circuit using the 6BK4A "beam triode", a high voltage triode.

The 6BK4A appears to me easy to abuse for producing X-rays. In fact, if used in normal use, it is normally enclosed in a "thickish sheet steel" "high voltage cage" whose main purpose is to absorb much of the X-rays normally produced by this tube. (And secondarily by the often-associated

3A3 or 3AT2 high voltage rectifier tube, occaisionally the 1G3GT/1B3GT that was more common in B&W sets which had lower high voltage. Many B&W sets used the 1K3 as a high voltage rectifier. I have seen B&W sets with a tube rectifier and no "high voltage cage", though never a B&W set with a tube shunt regulator.)

I seem to think that with a bit of extra negative gate voltage, the

6BK4A can take plate voltages around 40 or 50 KV. (Warranty: I refund what I got paid to post this if your 6BK4A fails or causes damage from excessive plate voltage up to 50KV without exceeding any ratings other than plate voltage, and that is my liability limit here.) (Over-volt a 6BK4A or the like at your own risk to life/limb of yourself or others and pets/livestock, or property damage, etc., from the 6BK4A or any associated tubes successfully producing X-rays, or from the 6BK4A or anything used with it or to over-volt it going zappo-zowie, blammo, kablooey, producing fire or noxious smoke or ultraviolet or nitrogen oxides or ozone, etc.)

With the spare POTS pairs you could run very long distances. And most of the POTS is ~ CAT 3, which should handle up to 10mhz. So you should be able to plonk the 38khz carriers right on to it without much attenuation. The 485 bus can run upto 1mbps over short distances.

If you live in Tornado alley, you can leave one set up in your shelter or in the house, just not turned on all the time. When storms are in the area, you turn it on, and tune the TV to Ch 12 or 13, whichever is devoid of broadcasters, and you watch the snow. You can turn the brightness down a little bit. Essentially, it works with any VHF dead air channel.

Pretty soon, you will see that the flashes on the screen match up with lightning flashes outside. The flashes, not the noise.

If there is a tornado in the area, or approaching, you will see the flashes increase and intensify. If you are ever unfortunate enough to see the screen fill up with flashes, you will know that there is a tornado very close. The deafening freight train sound might give it away as well.

So, tornado detector.

Nope. Scanning a beam across a face by applying a voltage makes the scan (the final destination) move slower or faster, not the emitted electron itself.

The anode supply can be up like 25kV to 32kV for all but the biggest CRTs and those are even more. That, through the electron gun, striking a Palladium ingot, will emit an X-ray flux. There are other target media as well, but essentially when an electron beam strikes a metallic target, there WILL be X-ray emissions. Some metals exhibit a far better flux than others. Angle of incidence comes into play as well.

The CRT's anode HVDC supply is OK, but the more pure the DC HV is, the more pure the X-ray flux will be, and the better the contrast ratio produced in any imagery will be.

Wow. I'll bet one of the old Heath Zenith cage array tuners would be cool to fool with. It was like an 8 inch long cage about 4 inches in diameter, IIRC.

Heath Zenith TVs were making pretty nice analog tuners, then Heath died, and Zenith went to digital methods.

Our early 60s 25" color Zenith lasted until the 72 lightning strike on the house.

I fixed so many tube TVs by cycling the tubes in and out of their sockets, burnishing the leads.It is amazing how mechanical the world was then compared to now. I guess I can't be the first person that has said that, but they all used to say MORE mechanical the world has gotten.

Electronics has turned that around, and we are no slowly but surely reducing the need for large mechanisms wherever we can.

Alas, even these miniature gadgets are "more" mechanical, so I am fooling myself.

Much better off finding an actual preferred medium like Palladium or such.

Computers are cheap. Big households have computers running in more than one room. Use the IR device and write some code for that PC to handle that "zone". Next.

Here is another fun use for manual tuner tv's of the past. If you can get the signal before it enters the display circuitry you'll have access to all sorts of public safety and other services soon.

Use a conveter for the digital stations; and bypass for the analog ones still on the air.

Dunno about links, but one can use the long industrial fluorescent tubes for accelerator pipe; use 1" wide aluminum "ring" strips at regular intervals to equalize the field gradient. Galena ore mixed in concrete makes for a reasonable shield if you need.
