Usenet on an Android smart phone?

What are you guys using for Usenet access on an Android smart phone? On the PC I use Thunderbird but that doesn't come in an Android version.

Has to have proper threading, sub-threading and download only posts I want to read. Sync with the PC is nice but not necesssary at all. It can _not_ be some web interface, I found none of those any good so far.

I am subscribed to a paid news server (news.individual.de) and would like to continue that.

"Newsgroups" from usenet.sinaapp.com works well enough.

Free: or $5: I run the free version on several tablets, phones, and Chromebooks, and live with the ads. Works fine. I have yet to run into any of the problems mentioned in the reviews.

Thanks, but it wants access to my photos and stuff without providing the usual "deny" button. That isn't going to happen.

It's in the app store under that name.

It just seems to be the way Google is. I had the same experience and even though I had no photos stored on my phone, I declined to give them permission simply on principle. It's a bloody outrageous thing to require of a customer IMHO.

If you're on an Android, you're totally pwned from the beginning, so why worry?

Oh, I'm well aware of that, Phil. I just felt I needed to say 'no' on principle, that's all.

Yes, kind of like on windoze, I would like a "Not OK" button... It could do exactly the same thing as the "OK" button but without the "OK" attitude.

Under: Settings -> Apps -> Newsgroup -> Permissions mine wants access to "storage". When I try to turn it off, Android Fragmented ver 6.0.1 complains: This app was designed for an older version of Android. Denying permission may cause it to no longer function as intended. CANCEL | DENY

Using Permissions Explorer, I found that the free version of Newsgroup

55/1.65 has permission to: ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE INTERNET READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE

I couldn't find a link to Permissions Explorer for some odd reason. However, there are plenty of other apps on the Play Store for inspecting app permissions.

Unless you're short on storage space and have moved some system directories to the external SD card, Newsgroup is not going to read or write to/from internal storage. Presumably, it only reads directories where it has read permissions, namely wherever it stores headers, indexes, articles, and attachments. I didn't find any reference to it groveling through photos or stuff. Methinks that you're fairly safe. I guess I should mention that the author and company are in China.

Newsgroup is the only offline and threaded Usenet reader for Android that I could find. However, I just found a possible candidate if you don't mind being online all the time: It looks rather old (Android 2.2 to 4.4) and probably will NOT work with your news.individual.de account.

termux, and slrn on the PC. (which is a linux pc)

I could probably run slrn on the phone, but then there'd be the syncing problem.

Surely any newsreader is going to be capable of accessing your images etc. E.g. for attaching a file. The only ones that won't are the web ones which Jeorg explicity excluded.
