What's tangled? Essentially most of those jobs boil down to swinging the capacitance of a Pockels cell as fast as you can in one direction. In the other direction it usually doesn't matter too much.
It's thousands of volts so you need a device that can do that. Until a couple of months ago that either meant a stack of transistors or a tube. Then Mouser started getting the IXYS high voltage FETs.
