I have lived here for over 20 years, and I've had horrible power line noise the entire time. I had two power outages, Wednesday night and Thursday mor ning. The first was the entire subdivision after a bad storm. The second outage was from a dead pole pig. It was the original pig from when the subdivision was fist laid out in 1964. My home was the first one here. The old had PCB oil in it, so they carefully lowered it to eye level. A very thick plastic bag, and a thick adsorbent pad was pulled up over it, and another pad was laid in the bed of their bucket truck before it was sw ung over and down into position. I was told that they used to rebuild these transformers until a few year s ago but 55 years of service in a high lightning area is pretty good. I was pleasantly surprised that I could listen to a local AM station wit hout a lot of 60Hz hash. It used to wipe out everything from 500KHz to 30 M Hz. It's amazing that a damaged transformer lasted so long. I wonder what t he inside of the can looked like? Gone are the flickering lights, the multiple resets of my Internet radio every five or less minutes, and apparently it was affecting my cable modem and router. My typical download speed was around 17Mb/s I downloaded over a GB of files at around 38 Mb/s a few hours ago. I was streaming a TV stati on and listening to the Internet radio at the same time with no dropouts.

Well, I brought this up in a regulatory list and got multiple answers, and a cite:

§15.103 Exempted devices.

The following devices are subject only to the general conditions of operation in §§15.5 and 15.29 and are exempt from the specific technical standards and other requirements contained in this part. The operator of the exempted device shall be required to stop operating the device upon a finding by the Commission or its representative that the device is causing harmful interference. Operation shall not resume until the condition causing the harmful interference has been corrected. Although not mandatory, it is strongly recommended that the manufacturer of an exempted device endeavor to have the device meet the specific technical standards in this part.

(a) A digital device utilized exclusively in any transportation vehicle including motor vehicles and aircraft.

There are enough vehicles out there that they were going to cause problems we would be seeing them already. I'm pretty confident the car makers aren' t going to ship products that create large amounts of EM. That would resul t in owners being forced to fix or sell their cars and that would look pret ty bad for a car company.

I think car companies will follow the regulations they are required to, and not extend themselves over those they are not.

And it takes some effort to constrain motor controllers from making sharp transitions.

That does not equate to radiating EMI. That requires an antenna.

Actually, sharp transitions in current are hard to obtain. Motors have lot s of inductance and the DC/DC converter circuits all have lots of inductanc e. There is a whole sub-field regarding reduction of EMI and there is no r eason to think EVs have any problems keeping it under control.

No worries, there are lots of other brands you can buy. The recently-discontinued Chevy Volt, well, they didn't much advertise it at all.

The 2015 is a pretty good value at just below 15k these days for low miles examples. Last of the first generation. I like the brown:

I filled the Volt's ~8 gallon tank for just under $10 the other day, thanks to the low gas prices and a few Shell fuel-rewards points I had lying around. I think I've put in a full tank of gas maybe three times since I got it. Should last a while

Well, two friends and I built an electric Miata. We had many issues with motor controller RFI getting into various A/D's on it.

What was the source of the RFI? Was it RFI or conducted? Did you solve the issues eventually? Do you think a major company can't resolve the issues?

I assume you understand the difference between conducted EMI and radiated RFI.
