Tek DPO2024

The big old 7000 series with the inserts? Those are among the best scopes Tek ever made, aside from the 2465 which is more portable. I have a 7704A.

Those were the days when Tek seemed to have had much better engineers. It is weird. There are companies who have great engineering but much of the rest is lousy and they can't keep the sales pipeline filled. Then there are companies who have good sales channels and materials management but who can't design great product anymore like they used to.

I use 'force trig' the get something on the screen what isn't at all what I'm looking for so I can see the scope triggered on an event. I have used the DPO2024 myself and its a nice scope although the screen resolution (400x240) is way to low. The variable input filtering is a nice feature to make signals look cleaner. IMHO Tektronix starts to get interesting at the TDS/DPO 3000 series though.

I don't think I ever pushed an 'auto setup' button on any scope :-)

They should change the name from 'Auto Setup' to 'Undo your perfered settings' Pressing that button leads to the utterance, 'Ahhhh, Sheeeeeiitttt.'

Some weeks ago I prepared a transient event (taking hours of preparation). After the shot I wanted to save the image and there it happened... Though I a saw the result and it was as expected, I had to do it all over again as the image had to be part of the design log.

What do digital scopes have in place of X-Y mode? Did they just dop it?

Try the Collusion add-in to show who's tracking. There are other add-ins that go further and block it, but I don't remember their names.

Most can do X-Y.

Not as pretty as an analog scope:

Gnaw, newer than that: raster CRT (magnetic deflection, I think). :( I don't remember if Asteroids is antialiased, but the scope has multiple levels of 'gray' (well, amber), which is good for waveforms.

They just sample and plot points. You have to set the sample rate with the timebase.

The fancier ones, with more memory, are able to do reasonable persistence on fast waveforms. They all come with infinite persistence, of course.

My Instek 2204 makes a purdier XY plot, but not as purdy as the analog ones. However, persistent mode is absolutely great for assessing the amount of phase shift change in a circuit over time, temperature, whatever. In the analog-only days we had to leave the Polaroid shutter open for that and many prints became mush. I use XY regularly.

XY display in yellow on mine, not exactly my favorite. Reminds me of the nicotine color screens that became popular after the first IBM-XT's grew old.

That's why many newer Agilent scopes have the "Undo" menu button!
