1) Create account for granddaughters without admin rights - the disadvantage is that wife will need to log in then ever after (and spyware e.t.c. can still hook a windows callback with proper priveledges such as wm_msg_timer and rape an pillage your system at leisure).

There is No Way to secure a box that crackers ... err ... teenagers have physical access too; so I would go for the last option.

(A Linux install on an olde Sparc Ultra 10 also tends to encourage outside play activities in children/teens... )

Worse: The "check network setup" in the windows troubleshooting help page will detect that the hosts file has 'stuff' in it and restore .. i.e. delete it!

Don't know if others have mentioned it...

1. Lock down IE by using the 'Internet Settings' (M$ arrogance there - as if IE *is* the internet, but I digress). I turn off *all* its features because I never use it. Disable ALL active scripting, activeX, java, cookies, and in particular disable 'run apps/process in an IFRAME', cross domain issues, etc.
2. Add the myspace domain to the hosts file (I saw an example of that in the thread) and route it to 127.0.0.1 - that will effectively make it non-existent.

This all requires that you tell said grandkids that if they mess with the settings you'll know and if they want to use internet on that machine they must use FF and that they obey it - failure might result in a 'NO' the next time they want to use it ;)

Turn off scripting, activeX, text only email, etc.. and hobble it so that it won't contract malware? (no trusted sites)

Block it with the firewall.

The folks at alt.fan.mozilla and alt.privacy.spyware will have better ideas. You'll need alt.privacy.spyware after they leave . . .

Lock down the settings for IE (control panel / internet options) so that it can't run activeX, javascript, or anything else dodgy. If you do that as an administrator, but only give your grandkids guest access, they will have to use FireFox (much safer) to get anywhere interesting.

As for the myspace - put a line "127.0.0.1 myspace.com" in the file \\windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\hosts - this will cause all dns lookups for myspace.com to return your own pc's address.

A recent story in a computer magazine indicated that MySpace is the #1 place to pick up nasty things, and my kids have done it, after their system get's fu'ed beyond repair and slows down they call me and I take my sweet time fixing it, last time it was about two months, and w/o it they freak out.

IE has a passworded nanny mode where you can set blocks, security levels and so on. FF doesn't seem to have that but OTOH it won't run active-X crap. FF also always asks for permission before running any dl'd stuff.

You should have set the redirect to your website, to remind them who is in charge. ;-)

Even better, you trick it to the local IP, so it immediately sees that no web server is there at all. When you do that for ad sites it speeds up the loading of any page with the ads.

Here's ready-made hosts file with a lot of known undesirables.

If you piss off a teenager their thoughts go to how to get around your blocking.

An innocuous message saying "... is not available, try again later" usually diverts them to other activities.
