A lot of old Tek scopes used that circuit. They did usually use pentodes as the error amp, and some klunky pass tube like a 12B4 or a
6080. And an official VR tube, not a neon reference.The triode version wouldn't be too bad, if the triode sees a constant-current plate load, namely a grid-cathode resistor on the pass tube.
Too bad nobody made p-channel tubes.
