Setting up some differential structures can't hurt. For the same reason audio professional do everything with XLR connectors.

Oh yeah, you can. This particular one starts rolling off around 18Hz. You just have to compensate for the attenuation down there to read the actual level. In this case the client wasn't really interested in the level. They just wanted me to come in, find the noise source and make it go away.

We do almost everything in XLR connectors too (4-wire networks are in Cat-5), even unbalanced audio which is about 90% of our market. :-( My box has balanced 2-wire interfaces with relays to switch output configurations for unbalanced networks.

Sound cards still suck. ;-)

Nah, they are one of the best inventions since sliced bread. Because they are literally free since a few years when all the new PCs came with one. It has saved the disks in my back some grief. In the olden days I had to schlepp a heavy audio analyzer. Actually, I have since scrapped it because nobody wanted to have it. It simply wasn't needed anymore, now I can do all that with laptops and PCs.

In the mud below 100Hz? Something isn't right, I never had that. One client is right next to a busy commercial runway and even there we have no problems.

Sorry. Our products are in the mud below 100Hz, so I haven't looked down there.

The eBay seller sent me a note with a link to the drivers. I=20 haven't had time to load them though. Maybe later today.

Steve indicated in an earlier post that the blocking caps could be=20 removed so it'll go down to DC. If it works well I may order some=20 more so I can play.

You do realize that most but not all sound cards these days only have mono for the Mic input and also, a small level of DC is at the plug for some to power up microphones, you may want to take that into consideration.

Getting a unit with Line Inputs (left+Right) would most likely yield the best results.

First, it's not true of the sound cards I'm using. Second, even if it were, it has nothing to do with my problems.

*ALL* of my sound cards have stereo line-in, though that doesn't help the 5MHz on the output, .1-1-Hz modulation on the outputs (and inputs), noise, and about a billion other problems.

BTW, I did hook the eBay special up and get something to run. The driver install fails on reboot but something comes out of the thing. Haven't tried recording anything yet.

Somehow I can't shed the feeling that some other software or the OS on your PC is messing with the sound card data stream. Then no matter how good or expensive a card you buy, it may not work. All I can say is that I never had issues similar to yours with bigs spikes and such in the data. However, I never run any other SW besides the data aquisition while doing EMI hunts.

Most modern ones won't because there is some embedded electronic/digital filtering going on in the chip. You'd have to first find out what chip is used and then obtain the data sheet, to see whether that "feature" can be hacked.

On my windows box, the "cheap" usb box worked without installing any drivers. I think there is some USB sound standard that these chips are supposed to follow. Linux is another story, but linux USB is always difficult, other than mice and keyboards.

The cheap USB soundcard PCB has a FCC marking on it, but damn if I could find it on the FCC database There was a manufacturers name on the board, but no dice.

Anyway, the thing looks like it was built for hacking. Easy access to the guts.

You have to do a web search before you buy Linux USB gadgets. I did that for the USB to serial adapter. It worked without installing anything both on the PC and the eeePC.

Else look in the kernel USB driver source for the name of the gadget.

Anything else like cameras seems to work too, as mass storage, use gphoto2 if it does not work, it has its own drivers. Most USB webcams work, but not all of them... Even my USB HDSPA/GPRS modem worked without installing anything on the eeePC.

All USB sticks work as mass storage.

The only thing missing a a driver for may Canon scanner. But with this Canon A470 camera you can just as well take a picture of the A4 format papers :-) Amazing.
