Definitely. The detector wouldn't work with the batter contents all over it. That's something to worry about in a detector that isn't used any way.

I know of one that was a "seeing-eye" dog.

Nobody pays any attention to the low battery warning beep anyway.

I used to listen to a radio call in show. The DJs had this thing about hearing that smoke detecttor beep in the background. f they heard it, they'd stop the topic of conversation right on the spot and try to guess how many weeks the detector had been chirping. Some of their callers had become so habituated to it, they didn't realize it was chirping.

Basically, their whole game was a veiled suggestion that their callers higher level cognitive functions were not fully operative.

Ready made "pain" :)

Heh heh heh, I have a Ford F-150 that beeps 5 long beeps to let me know that my light bulb is burned out in the Air Bag module under the dash in some infernally difficult place. It also starts beeping again after every 30 minutes-- just in case I forgot. I mark long trips that way now.

I've got so used to it that when I get in and drive away, I don't even hear it (except for the 30 minute re-occurances). One day, I'm going to get that thing out -- it just needs another bulb soldered into place.

The dealership wants to replace the entire module, of course. I'll live with it before that ever happens.

That was un called for, But I'm going to make allowances because you say you are often in pain.

It's so you can SLEEP in the dark. The battery is good for weeks after the low voltage alarm starts, a few extra hours isn't going to hurt.

perhaps the LED could be put into the voltage sensing circuit somehow to get that effect for free.

I made the mistake of relying on the previous poster--I assumed one who'd owned one knew.(*)

(*) It always seemed strange to me that so many engineers can't spell. Still, I wouldn't capitalize it unless it were a proper name. E.g., "Jackomutt was a mix--dalmatian, rottweiler, and a dash of who- knows-what."

But fair enough--I'm in the doghouse now...
