Do you do this? I often wake up around 2AM and think for a while. It's a good time to have ideas, since it's quiet and you aren't getting emails and phone calls and people barging into your office shouting numbers. I do have to jot down any good ideas, because I might forget them by morning.

When I lived alone, I would often adopt a 36 hour "day" split into two 4+14 hour sleep-wake cycles. I found this the most comfortable (never feeling overtired nor "anxious" that I couldn't fall asleep) living pattern.

But, doing so "successfully" requires masking all zeitgebers that threaten to disrupt that! This is when I adopted the "no phone contact" philosophy and moved all correspondence to email and snail mail. I also had the drapes pulled in all the rooms (neighbors must have really wondered "what's going on in that house?!").

This is a LOT harder when your not alone in the house (though I still manage to slip back to that schedule with some regularity; especially when I am fully engaged in a project).

It is usually easier for people to slip to a longer day period (especially when accompanied by strong zeitgebers) than a shorter one; the period of dissynchrony tends to be passed more quickly.

*Big* shortenings (e.g., the 18 hour "half-days") are usually easier to adapt to, quickly, than smaller ones (try cutting your day to 23 hours -- and keeping it there!)

Over the long haul, however, something very close to 24 seems to most closely coincide with endogenous regulators.

Look at my web site for proof of circuit performance.

But I wouldn't waste a minute trying to impress a mean, creepy geezer like you.

Only if one of the brewskys wants out :-)

Else what works best for me is a solid 8h stretch of sleep if there's enough time for that. I can lay down and fall asleep like a log within minutes, and wake up almost by myself 8h later. Any earlier and I'll need a very loud alarm clock. Like this:

This one below could also work :-)

That's the nice thing about being a consultant. I can tune out almost any time I need to think hard about some circuitry. You could do that as well. Just stroll down to Zeitgeist, notepad in hand but leave your cell phone behind and don't tell anyone where you are going :-)

Hmmm, lets see.

John wakes up at 2AM, "jots down any good ideas" and then wakes back up by morning, (say 6AM).

PeterD would "WRITE THE GOOD IDEAS DOWN" and then 22 hours later wakes up.
