Anyone know what's up with Rochester electronics. I use to think of them as a last resort for that obselete part that you didn't buy enough of. (And be prepared to pay through the nose for it.)
But now when I'm searching on octoparts, I find them listed, with lot's of stock and good prices for all sorts of current IC's my most recent search.

There are a bunch of (mostly) Chinese outfits that list every part number they have ever found in a search as being in stock. When you actually try to buy one, they have a mad free for all trying to find out if anybody actually has physical parts. One of the tip-offs is that for some oddball part, they list 17 units in stock. Check around, and oddly, there are at least a dozen DIFFERENT outfits that ALL list that they have exactly 17 pieces in stock.
I did get caught in a situation where I had almost 100 blank PC boards that needed an obsolete Xilinx CPLD. So, I bought 100 of them from a Chinese vendor. Well, as soon as I opened the package, it was clear they were not original Xilinx parts. They had no pin 1 dimple in the molding. Most of them DID work, but it was fairly obvious I was doing the testing, and had been given totally untested die. Counterfeit? Old wafers that were never packaged? Who knows?
