RGB LED's, lightpips, smt

I am looking for a cheap source of RGB led's in smt. I have a few

that I've been playing around with but some problems are:

The colors do not mix well. The purpose for using RGB was that I wanted to get many possible colors out. When I run 2 or 3 of the led's in the package I don't end up with a strong mixed color.

I also need some sort of "light pipe" that I can cut to length but diffuses the colors well enough so that the viewing angle is somewhat large and the colors are mixed well(I guess something somewhat opaque will do?).

What I'd actually like to have is a sort of "cap" or "button" that I could fit over the whole in the wood that I'll be mounting the led's in that is scratch resistant. This will cover the led and should mix the colors along with increase the viewing angle.

When the led is "lifted" to the surface(hopefully a few have been following along with my objective), which is around 4-8 mm it shines much better but is much harder to use. If I don't lift the led, such as if I put it on a pcb, it is much easier to use but then I somehow need to "lift" the light to the surface. I've seen LED pipes that do this sort of thing and I need something with the same effect but for the led's I'll be useing and also which I can cut to length. (since the length varies)

I've not seen any very thin led pipes though and I'm not sure how well they capture the led light. "Lifting" the led will give better results but harder to implement. In either case I still have to "mix" the individual colors and worry about the viewing angle(it's not a problem if the led is at the surface but is if it's below).

Any help would be appreciated, Jon

Ok... lets hope it is the solution ;)

Right now I just hot glued the led in the hole.. it works nice except it I can't do it on the guitar neck with good results(actually it probably will work ok but rather use something else). Of course the colors are not mixed great and I still have the wiring problem(it can be done but is tedious). The led pipe stuff seems like the way to go... only if I could actually find some that small.

Thanks... I'll reply to the email once I get it if I have any questions, Jon

3 mm plastic fiber optic is cheap, easy to work with , and a short length contact coupled to your multicolor led will work fine. So will a short piece of acrylic rod.

Will this give approximately the same effect as "lifting" the led or will it reduce the viewing angle signficiantly?

Actually I do have some fiber optic cable from a small "kit" I brought once. Is the stuff easy to cut or will it shatter?

Is it glass or plastic?

Frosted glass works pretty decently. Here are some 6mm beads:

This place has white beads that would work as long as they aren't totally opaque:

Two part epoxy is a good material to fill with, but it might mess up the frosting effect of the glass beads by making them look clear.
