Return HV to Audio GND?

I am igniting a neon tube using a car audio amp (not bridged) and 240V step up transformer. The tube is, of course, wired across the HV winding.

Is it acceptable (and safe for the amp) to connect one side of the tube to the ground lug of the amp's audio output.

IOW, that this becomes a 0 volt reference and no HV is transmitted back into the amp.

Yes, there is a design-related reason for this.

Thank you for any advice.

Yes, it's OK, and actually quite a good idea.. If there's a way to distinguish the "start" end of the winding ground it, because it's closer to the core.

Grounding a centre tap would halve the voltage to ground over most of the HV side.
