Programming EPC4 flash devices

There's a bit of a stir around here about problems trying to program EPC4 flash memory devices over JTAG. Apparently, these things have either Sharp (A-suffix) or Intel (C-suffix) chips inside, and the latter refuse to be programmed.

Oddly enough, EPC16 devices of either origin program just fine.

Anyone here knows more?

Thanks, Jeroen Belleman

I used STMicro M25P40, which is much cheaper than EPC4. I assumed it was rebadged as an EPC4 by Altera. There are some pins that the EPC4 datasheet calls "gnd" which really have functions if you look at the M25P40 datasheet.

Also, by "over JTAG" do you mean with the SFL? Because a direct programmer connection would be to a "config" header which is on the serial bus, not the JTAG.
