The AT24C01A skips the I2C bus adressing totally: The first 7 bits will go directly to the byte address counter, adn the 8th bit is the R/W- bit, as usual. Instead of a start, bus address+R/W, memory slot, repeated start, read, stop sequence, the read sequence is start, memory slot+R/W, read, stop.
I would just use my device programmer and read it. If you are paranoid about writing over something, some parts have a write protect pin that needs to be pulled down for writing, make a socket up that has that line pulled to Vcc and off you go.
