I2C was developed by Philips and in the old DOS ages they published a I2C interface using a small PCB with some 7414 buffers and some R/C that had to be connected to the parallel port. The program that came with it was just a bitbanging master but I could do everything I needed with it. I used it far into the windows years and even saved some old XT-machine to serve it. It still should be on the net somewhere (and maybe even on my dusty attic.) These days I'd use a programmer to read the device.

No, it was Philips. Hence the over-engineering. Its amazing I2C got picked up the way it did. Most things Philips invents are a major (marketing) catastrophy.

I hope I am not harping on this product.

If you get a PICAXE 14-M (about $5-$7) wire up a 3 lead rs232 cable or use a 232 - usb, and have a prototype board then you can read the i2c and dump it to the PC - probably in less than 30 minutes.

When you don't need the chip to have much smarts or high speed PICAXE is by far the easiest and and quickest way to go.

Yes, it's a GBIC optical transceiver, whose specs are in the public domain. The issue hinges on what's in the vendor and reserved memory locations. I can't go into any more detail than that, unfortunately.

That should be PICAXE 14-M2, but think the better approach is to buy a programmer

What about a cheap microchip serial analyser, pretty sure you can write scripts to control it easily.

There is the source, and in case you want to play the I2C lib is in iiclib.c

Maybe the AT24C01A has a different I2C address than the 24C16, dunno.

As a protocol you can run it at any speed you like if you control the hardware. Or slower, I have used it externally too, over rather long distances, twisted wire, with transistor divers at +/- 12 V

No, they went to Sony to get support for the format, and Sony made it bigger so some classic piece of music would fit on it. Sony cannot even make a decent electric motor.
