OT: Win2K problem

CDROM.SYS was long before SATA. I am surprised it works at all.

The files are likely still untouched. The problem is more likely a registry setting that got modified by some other thing added or changed.

I have a (SATA) DVD RW drive and it works fine with ONE exception that is driving me nuts. The exception is: if i insert a BLANK disk (to write for any reason), the system crashes (usually complaining about HAL.DLL); must turn off external power source or reset.

All driver software related is dated 6/19/2003, listed below: G:\WINNT\system32\HAL.DLL 66K G:\WINNT\system32\storprop.dll 35K G:\WINNT\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys 28K G:\WINNT\system32\drivers\redbook.sys 35K

Previously, i found "originals" somewhere (cannot find now), replaced them and then marked them as ReadOnly; that worked for a number of months. This "fix" no longer works.

1: Where can i find reliable originals of these files? 2: What else can i do to protect their integrity to prevent the crash problem from repeating?

You may be right about the registry. However, _once_, i replaced the mentioned files as stated and had success, which tends to argue that they may have been "touched". Now i can be nasty and replace cdrom.sys with uide.sys which is the only DOS cd rom sys file that works for a SATA drive (and i have a collection of over 6 of them).

Obtain one of the CRC programs and do CRC *.* >ThisDir.CRC

Then if something creates DDL hell you know which files it has mangled.

You can get files of identical length same date (different time) and different content out in the wild. One works one doesn't.

It isn't uncommon for some installers to trample over system files without bothering to ask first. It isn't called DLL hell for nothing!

Well, the OS refused to allow any other version of CDROM.SYS to exist (yes, i renamed UIDE.SYS properly); in fact deleting the existing one is of no help as the OS, within less than a minute, puts in a new copy. So, in a theoretically useful way to "fix" the registry without knowing WTH to fix, i am going to uninstall Pinnacle, use RegCleaner, and then re-install.

Wound up un-installing Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD to fix problem; never mind that it had worked for YEARS. Using Nero 6 Ultra now.
