OT. Firing up an old computer

1) with NO power, replace the battery, then fire it up again or whatever to eXplicitly going to the BIOS. 2) The first screen has info on the hard drives, and you should look and perhaps configure them carefully. If they are not recognized, you cannot use/boot to them. 3) Just because the first HD is recognized, does not mean it is bootable, but a "save and exit" will allow the BIOS to make the attempt (watch carefully).

Well,if you put 2 drives into a computer, there are two options: a) jumper both to Cable Select. b) jumper Primary Master as "Master with slave" - not just plain jane "master", and jumper Primary Slave as "slave".

  • One of those Dallas (aka vaporware Maxim) pieces of shit. Do not try to find a replacement, as they have not been made for ages and "replacements" are all old crap.

Wrong. This requires a specialized cable, and the operator knowing which drive goes onto which position on the cable.

Does the cover pop off, or is it potted in place?

Make your own replacement. Buy a 20 pin DIP socket, and wire in the battery, and the OC compatible RTC clock replacement. Wire up your little breadboard on a DIP, and voila'. Put the battery in a socket clip, and it is fully serviceable.

Make more and sell them on e-bay to legacy machine reviver/rebuilders.

Why would they still make a clock chip that stops at Y2K? I've popped the plastic cover off some of the chips and mounted a coin cell holder on perfboard to use a CR2032.

Almost correct: "specialized cable" means 80-wire cable instead of the old "obsolete" cable. No longer "specialized"; common and standard for many years. NO FUSS: "knowing which drive goes onto which position" has ALWAYS been a requirement, even for floppy drives. And this is a no-brainer as good operational HDs will work in either position (booting depends on HD contents in MBR, etc).

AFAIK the Dallas DS12887 has not been made for ages. Jameco would be the only reliable source for these old obsolete chips, as they are known for stocking old tech stuff for sales over the long term (eg: analog monitors, FDC boards, RS-232 boards, etc). But when they are out of stock of the older hardware, that is EOL in spades.

There may be nearby vacant connections on the motherboard where a battery pack may be connected. Try and find a manual for the board.

Real time Clock Lithium Battery M48T86PCI

I see they are available, (in fact a lot are available) I see them for $5. I wonder how good the batteries are in them?

IBM was using potted parts in their PS2/30, I opened it with a hacksaw blade and vise-grips

These parts have the battery pins of the chip bent upwards and soldered to wires going to the battery.

You are right, I was think of older boards with soldered-on nicad batteries - not these things. They had a jumper to swap to using external batteries, when the on-board failed.
