OT : coffee

Black or espresso?

Function or flavor? (Do you need it to wake up, or just enjoy the taste once in a while?)

I'm more of a tea drinker but lately I've started drinking really strong, dark short espressos. Goy my own espresso machine now.

I'm addicted. I have to have a cup and a half of very dark Peet's in the morning, or a bowl of double-shot latte if we go out; lots of cream and sugar enhance the effect. The remarkable productivity of modern society is quite unnatural, driven largely by stimulants. Coffee, tea, chocolate, and sugar changed the nature of Europe in the

17th and 18th centuries.

Decafe - light. Lots. It's not for the wake up.

Coffee? Can't stand the stuff! When I was little (4?. 5?) I found a mug that I 'thought' was some cold hot chocolate, and took a big sip.

Since then, the only way I can stand coffee is one part coffee, six parts hot chocolate... ;-)

Yes, there's a recent fad among wealthy observant Jews -- to have, in addition to the traditional Shabbos goy, an Espresso goy.

This is not in direct response to your questions, but I remember seeing a sign in a New York City deli near Columbia University many years ago that had an interesting nomenclature for ordering coffee (not espresso drinks, just ordinary deli coffee).

"dry" meant: no sugar "high" meant: black "high and dry" meant: black, no sugar

I don't remember what the terms were for coffee with milk and sugar, probably just "light" and "sweet."

What a tragic experience!

I grew up in New Orleans, with the smell of roasting coffee being the most fragrant odor among many. Everybody went to Cafe du Monde or Morning Call for coffee and hot beignets, kids included. I must have consumed kilograms of caffeine by now. Of course, chocolate is great stuff too.

When you're about to design something challenging, being amped up really helps.

In Boston "coffee regulah" means milk, no sugar.

We're going out in a couple of minutes to a place with fabulous French pastries that serves coffee in big bowls, without handles. I get the double-shot-latte that has fancy designs in the foam, then mess it up by stirring in 5 or 6 packs of raw brown sugar.

Nah, he'll go after HFCS, after the sugar cartel ponies up to his reelection fund.

Aha! At last! An explanation. Excess sugar makes you wacky and child-like, calling all who behave like adults, "senile" :-) ...Jim Thompson

In New York that would be called "cuohphy" :-)

5-6 packs? Euww. I never add sugar to my coffee but just like you guys, we only drink the good stuff. Homemade.

The only time we drink coffee with anything in there other than coffee beans and water is on some cold winter night, Irish Coffee.

I only add sugar until it barely tastes bitter. We drink hand-dripped Peets french roast at home, optical density around 1.0.

Bailey's is good, too.

I prefer the Safweway cola to Coke. It's lighter, less cloying, less cinnamon flavor. I find the excess cinnamon in Coke interferes with the taste of my rum.

I prefer Tesco's "original" Cola. Better taste than either of the "real things" and about 1/3 the price.

The only way I ever drink it. People say regular "regulah" in NYC too. Probably the vowel sounds a little different. The Boston "a" sounds a wee bit hahda. Jim, as one having someone experience of the Boston tongue, you can jump in here if you like.

A mug of espresso in the AM, then probably one other later in the day. Partly a body mass issue (6'4", 260+-10 lb depending on the time of year).

I'm guessing an espresso shot is somewhere around an ounce, or an ounce and a half for a big one. If you have an ordinary coffee mug and fill it with espresso then we're talking 6 or 8 "shot-equivalents?"
