In the 70's we flipped a trailer somewhere in New mexico, Lots of people were willing to help. It's a different mind set in those 4 states that touch in one spot.

Yep. Also West Texas. East Texas, not quite as friendly, but still pretty friendly.
In the late '70's I ran out of gas due to a gas gauge that failed. A person stopped, drove 15 miles to a gas station and returned with a jerry-can of gas, and wouldn't take any money, just asked that I drop off the can at the gas station on my way ;-)
On the other hand, in Cambridge in 1960, shortly after we were married, we're walking thru Central Square and an epileptic falls in the middle of the street. So traffic simply drives around him. My wife (a good Southern girl) was hysterical. I forcibly stopped a cabby and made him call for the police... he was not happy. ...Jim Thompson
