It's unusual for a plane to have so much frictional heating that the _cockpit_ has to be cooled to prevent the pilot from frying, though. That's what the fuel cooling did in the SR-71, according to Ben Rich's book "Skunk Works" (Good read btw).

The F4 Phantom's speed limit was set by the cockpit glass melting, according to my contact, who was a VN test pilot with more than 2500 hours supersonic in the F4.

Could conceivably be. I wasn't there, I'm just quoting the head thermodynamicist on the SR-71 project. ;)

That seems like an unjustifiable limitation, considering the MiG 25 could go Mach 3.2 and only ruin the engines.

No, it's some form of glass. But they should have been able to get better glass if that was a problem.

I'm sure that the cost of higher quality "glass" wasn't the problem. Reducing the friction is the right answer, but would reduce visibility. The design is optimized for dog-fighting, not top speed.

The very high power of the engines is more than enough to exceed speed limit despite the very high-drag design (due in large part to the splitters at the engine intakes). Backing off the throttle at speed makes you hang forward in the seat belts!

The ability to fly for a limited duration at 10% above than the sustainable speed no doubt saved quite a few pilot's lives during the VN war. Just need to slow down again when the windscreen starts to bulge inwards.

I'm surprised it would have enough fuel to get in trouble and then reach and maintain a speed that would cause trouble long enough. Not exactly economical when all the fire in the back is on full tilt.

So using the latest fancy language means that you can't code an incorrect program, then. Cool. ;)

Also, US customary units =/= Imperial units. An imperial gallon of water is 10 pounds, whereas a US gallon is only about 8.34 lb--the usual approximate conversion ratio is 5/6. (The US fluid ounce is a bit bigger, so that 128 oz US = 5/6 * 160 oz Imperial, not 4/5.)

I'm going to give Ada a try as a little project (once I get a bit of free time, ha) - it sounds like it's good for simulating algorithms targeted at embedded applications using generics.

I can do it with MATLAB too, but the cost is infinitely higher.

No, it simply means that you can't shoot both feet with one bullet without explicitly stating that you're crossing your feet (and presumably understand the possible consequences).
