That's a generalizable scheme, of course; things like feedforward also combine multiple paths, and it all hangs on choosing frequency ranges for each of multiple paths, and combining so the stability argument is 'this path dominates' over most of the range, and the short crossover frequency range is susceptible to single-frequency trickery.

It is common to have a current loop for large dc motors as well as the outer velocity loop. In state-feedback you can think of multiple feedback from the states. If you are thinking of integrity of a closed-loop system then Google for that. Lot of papers on when you lose an outer loop. Redundancy etc
