Most over-rated book

Yeah, it's kind of like a predator; you know how predators always target the weak and lame? Well, that's what alcohol does - it kills off the weak, lame brain cells, leaving the strong, vibrant ones to improve the species!

It's true, you never get any new neurons, but you're born with about twice as many as you'll ever need, so we can afford to lose a bunch of them (Mommy drops you, you learn to not jump off the roof, etc.)

But there is no known limit to the number of new _synapses_ that can be grown, and that's been experimentally demonstrated with lab rats: that learning actually does grow new synapses. And the interconnections, and their patterns, are where the true brain-power is. >:->

It appears that Thompson, much like Terrell, has some kind of personal hardon for me, as evinced by his intentional misspelling of my name, just like the trollkiddies and other fucktards do. ;-)

"Grise" isn't even pronounced like "grease," or "greasy." Bob Griese's name is, but it's spelled differently. "Grise" rhymes with "rice." On the phone, Dad used to say, "Grise, rhymes with nice," but that's not as effective in print, because people might think I mean Nice. :-)

I think it's primarily because I don't bow down before him in awe, but instead, call him on his bullshit when I see it.

Heck, speaking of plonking, I didn't even notice the attempted insult until about four posts later, when people were talking about someone in the third person. I say "attempted" insult, because you can't insult a man who aspires to wisdom - the truth will bring him closer to wisdom, and an untruth isn't worth bothering with. (this is a paraphrase of a quote whose author I don't remember.)

I came across Balzac in translation. It didn't do anything for me. Barbara Tuchman is not a historian that I've come across. Jonathan Israel - "The History of the Dutch Republic" and "The Radical Enlightenment" - is essentiall the only historian whose books I look out for.

Most people see him as decidedly shallow - an opinion confirmed by his unfortunate behaviour in 1941.

Grateful as I am for the pointers, I've been through all the posts twice or more and just can't find it.

It was a wry, apt observation on the nature of men, the context being politicians and government, but I'm afraid I'll just have to live without it. I've searched every which way I can think of, and gone brute-force too.

WHAT? The Dark Tower series was great, although the ending let down a bit.

The ending is *always* a let down. He's great on characterization, and crap on ideas

I actually liked it. But, of course, a book with a main theme of self-reference SHOULD be repetitive, in fact there should be no beginning or end, like a Moebius (sp?) strip. I think he kind of nailed it.
