Geesh, I've liked lots of the books that have been mentioned. Hofstadter, Rand, Heller,.. But perhaps I have low taste. I've got one of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan tales in my backpack at the moment.

There was a tome by Wolfram ("A new kind of science"??). I was not able to finish it. I'd give it a thumbs down.

I read AoE years ago and wondered what all the fuss is about. The books and syllabi I had to buy for school where much more informative and in depth. Actually, I don't think anyone will learn to design electronics from just reading AoE. But then again, I don't drink coffee and have no cell-phone.

For the record: I do both electronics AND software.

Slowman's comments help explain why he remains unemployed. To him, designing is copying.

We got zapped by excessive jfet gate leakage current recently, and found the explanation and the fix in AoE. I'd rarely used jfets in the past (but expect to use more in the future) so I missed the subtleties of their behavior.

It's got some good stuff on low-noise design, RF, various exotica. I think it's especially good for non-EEs, people instrumenting scientific stuff for example, or kids getting interested in electronics.

It is rather dated, but we should have a new edition in about ten years.

It's odd that I've got a couple of patents, then. Most electronic design is copying. Every now and again the prior art won't give you what you want, and you have to indulge in the more time-consuming and unpredictable business of invention. I'm better a that than most of the people I worked with, but I don't invent anything that I don't have to.

It's a pity he doesn't have anything useful to say.

He was enormously observant and very profound. But he had fun doing it, a concept you certainly wouldn't understand.
