Math is White Privilege...

We're not talking about any of that, we're talking about the natural number s.

If the way White Math is taught in White America is so great, then why are White Americans so bad at it on average?

Try reading a mathematics textbook in Starbucks sometime and a bunch of suburban white people will nearly line up to tell you how bad they were at it in school, like it's something they take pride in.

People see a nice looking woman and say "She sure looks great in that parka."

We do get a few hot days a year, typically in October, but humidity is low then so it's not too bad. Practically nobody has residential air conditioning here. We leave the heat on all year.

Maybe it's how you look at it, or when or if. I wonder what quantum physics would be, quantum racist physics?

Counting is elementary and fundamental mathematics. Apples aren't equal, so reducing them to tokens which are equal and interchangeable is a process o f abstraction.

James Arthur will tell you that Americans spend more per head on education than everybody else. What he won't tell you - since his own mathematical ed ucation seems to have been skimped - is that the average spend is the arith metic mean.

The median can be different, and American education spending varies a lot from school district to school district. I've never been able to find stati stics on that, which is suspicious in itself. What you can find are statist ics on is the variation from state to state - New York (the highest) spends three times as much per head as Utah and Idaho (the lowest). Idaho voted 5

9.2% for Trump, Utah only 45.1%, but Utah also gave 21.3% to Evan McMullin, which also doesn't suggest that their education system had done a good job ).

"I got straight As in calculus but I made a concerted effort to forget all of it as soon as I could, I'm so bad at math now" is a common sentiment I've heard from adults who came from school districts where a lot of money was spent

OK fair enough, but mathematics can exist completely independently of physical objects that it's possible to make direct observational statements about.

The US army started giving IQ tests in WWI, 50 years after the Civil War. The relative scores from top to bottom were:

northern whites northern blacks southern whites southern blacks

It's obvious the southern white trash had an influence on black people. Unfortunately a lot of black people associated illiteracy with their own race, hence the black students who used to say the studious ones were "acting white" when they were really acting northern. I don't think black kids have said that in 25 years or so. White southerners also seem to have learned that reading isn't a bad thing.

The highest IQ candidates probably didn't make the best boots-on-the-ground soldiers, though. Book smarter people have a tendency to overthink situations, which is a curse in situations where the most productive course of action is to be _doing_ something (even if it's sub-optimal) immediately, not thinking.

The army didn't use the kids with high IQ scores as boots-on-the-ground soldiers - the infantry had an average IQ of 85. The smarter candidates were used to man the supply train that kept the cannon-fodder armed and fed.

Our modern numbers and positional digits comes originally from India.

She's obviously never heard of algebra, algorithms, or zero then. (all are Arabic terms)

Back in the days of oppressive apartheid in South Africa being very good at mathematics was one way out of the Soweto slums for a mere handful of exceptional Zulu students. I met one of them at university.

Depends on your starting axioms.

There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't!

I recall in my first year at university the mathematicians spent their entire first term on a formal proof that 0 != 1 and then deriving the natural counting numbers. Some jumped ship to physics as a result.

In logic 1 + 1 = 1 (still true if "+" is used to mean either OR or AND)

And in Roman numerals I + I = II

Thanks heavens we are not stuck with their number system!
