Hi,

I want to build a simple transmitter / receiver device to detect 50Hz from the domestic wiring system i.e twin and earth wire 2.5 mm squared thru a brick wall about 100mm. Have googled without success. Any help would be appreciated

Don't bother. You can buy them cheap from hardware stores and the like. They are built into many Stud Finders.
