There is no possible protection from meteoroid hits than can be offered to a spacecraft. A long jouney is likely as safe as walking through a minefield.

Instead of worrying about d*****ad space frontiers, the human race could do a hell of a lot more good by fixing a few things on planet earth before exporting the concept of mismanaging resources outside our own system.

They rejected the Orion because it requires fission bombs for its engine (just little bitty ones, but there's a certain minimum for any useful output, if I understand accurately.) I went googling for Nerva the other day, however, and apparently the idea is still alive.
They did use one (Orion - type; I've also heard the term "Dumbo" used) in the battle scene in "Footfall" by Niven and Pournelle; It was a very heroic climax. %-)

Since there's no planet in our own solar sytem capable of supporting life, the minimum distance required to travel to find anywhere else is to the next solar system. You are now talking light years of distance each of which is ~ 9.4 trillion ( 10^12 ) km.
Here are some nearby stars.
The nearest is 39480000000000 km away. To get there in 10 yrs will *only* need a craft capable of 450 million km/hr ! That's about warp 0.4 btw to use trekkie talk.

It's not something where the experiment needs to be done. The answer is already known. No new laws are there to be found. Interplanetery travel is simply a large engineering task
- not science at all.
