low noise power supply

Hi,

Anyone have a source for a +-12V/200mA+ 5V/2A+ powersupply that has low voltage ripple (ie less than 10mV output ripple)? Most switchers ie:

seem to have around 50mV on the 5V rail and 100mV on the 12V rails.

cheers, Jamie

You may have to build your own. I work on a system that needs 100 uV long-term stability on the 5 V supply, and it was a HELL of a problem to make it work. We use the Nat Semi 4140 reference and the AD706 op amp which has really low 1/f noise.

Take a look at HP/Agilent 662X series. (6621A, 6622A, 6623A, 6624A, and

6627A) When new they're $8K to $14K IIRC, but you can get used ones very cheap on Ebay.

Quite - or your own LDO reg cct. If it really must be fully switched mode, the higher the switcher frequency the smaller the gulps of i*t it delivers, and thus the smaller the ripple.

Look at how well this regulates with HV in with loads of ripple and load swing. Maybe it'll give you some ideas.

There is a very low noise SMPS chip by Linear Tech., the LT1533, along with App Note 70 by Jim Williams.

It's a great read even if you don't use it.
