I haven't noticed, but my setup is peculiar.
Using Linux, I have a local usenet proxy server, "leafnode" that does all the storage. Thunderbird is set to cache only metadata, not message contents. The caveat is I can not do content search.
For instance, on this group TB says I have 95961 unread posts.

The problem is that scalable algorithms can be far more complex than quick algorithms, so guess which usually win?
Slowness and instability are often caused by memory leaks as well.
In the realtime world, we find that many things are best implemented as a bidirectional linked-list block FIFO, with access to both ends. This architecture has O[1] scaling, right down to the last block, which allows graceful behavior even when overloaded.
