My Samsung laptop has Mem: 6019076k total, 1177296k used, 4841780k free, 63900k buffers Swap: 10485756k total, 0k used, 10485756k free, 578648k cached Also some solid state memory that I do not use, but the original windows was on it, replaced it with Linux.

If all else fails I have a laser projector too (not very good), but very small :-) Anyways if it makes you happy OK.

Wow! You literally understand nothing about EV charging. I know it has all been posted here 100 times at least, so if you missed the facts, you must have been working pretty hard.

ASCII art fails in Google Groups, but I know what you are talking about. That's why I like my 17 inch screen. It's "larger" than a 60 inch set on the wall. Actually, the room I'm in right now is only 9 foot (2.7m), so a 60 inch display might just be bigger by a small amount but might not fit on the space left next to the door. But one of my laptop screens has more than 1920 resolution, so it would need to be a 60 inch, 4K display to be any improvement at all. I'm good with the 17 inch home theater (with the ear buds or headset).

I guess the OS is fast, but it can be very slow when running apps. Can you bench mark an LTspice simulation and I'll compare it to my machines? Do you think it will be 10 to 1 or 100 to 1 in speed?

Indeed, different strokes for different folks. Your needs are for much less of a machine, so the ARM works for you.

I've been threatening to switch from Windows to Linux for years, but everytime I start to make inroads, something happens that makes me rethink the idea. One of the earlier investigations was cut short when I was pointing out the relative difference in support considering all the various info on the web, in particular that individuals can be pretty hard core expecting you to know all manner of things before they will assist. Someone jumped in to say that's no longer true, the Linux zealots were a thing of the past and a zealot jumped in to say something like if you weren't going to memorize man, you didn't deserve to use Linux. lol!

Now I'm pretty durn happy with Windows. It really does seem to get better with each new release. You just need to learn what "features" to turn off like UAP under Vista. Once I turned that off Vista worked fine. There were some things to disable with Win8 and it was fine. But Win10 doesn't have much of that unless you consider McAfee to be an undesirable Windows feature rather than the manufacturer installed virus it really is.

Maybe I'll put Linux on that 12 inch netbook. I can't recall if it has 2 GB or 4 GB. It has a "special" edition of Win7, would that run in 2 GB??? I think I had 3 or 4 GB for Vista. The computer had 4 GB installed, but some part of it was reserved and could not be addressed because of some aspect of the addressing, 32 bit issues I think.

Some truth in that, I already had a little Unix experience in the late seventies. It made me buy a book about Unix. When I got across a Linux CD in 1998 it was just: make a floppy and boot in Linux. Took that book and off I went Free compiler (gcc) what more do you want. Because I was reading Usenet back then with windows 3.1 and trumpet winsock I think it was and Free Agent reader, I wanted something similar for Linux, so I wrote it.. It was called 'Secret Agent' but then somebody suggested 'NewsFleX' and that is still the name. I wrote lots of basic stuff that I needed,.. One plus is that I have a searchable database of all postings back to 2000 or so, and a searchable email database of all email back to 1998. Lots has changed in Linux and much has been screwed up IMNSHO for example dbus .. But if you can code in C and have the time, then the sky is the limit with that OS. But even for the clueless if you install Debian then you get lots of good stuff running out of the box.

It has been discussed here many times that there is need for zero expansion of the power grid, either generation or transmission to support EV charging for everyone in the US (I can't comment on third world countries like the UK). What is required is a means of organizing/coordinating charging so it mostly happens at off peak times, which is not at all hard since most people will want to charge when they are not driving the cars, lol. That happens to be largely at work during midday and at home in the evenings/night. At work EVs can absorb the huge midday excess of solar generation (local or concentrated). At home EVs can absorb the fallow capacity sized to drive the afternoon and morning usage peaks.

If managed properly the vast majority of EV charging will be a benefit to the leveling of electrical demand and not any sort of a burden.

Instead of making vague allusions to something you have heard or read, why not discuss verifiable facts?

You are way to optimistic as to solar I think. And US power infrastructure is a disaster with all those overground lines. Every few month you hear 'thousands without power for extended times' after some storm.

Already many years ago when this electric car hype started I did a 10 minute back of the envelope calculation, and said: No No. My first job after school was designing equipment for power stations. That company build transformers so big you needed a ladder to climb on those.

One issue with electric only transport is that if there is an emergency (and there will be) and no power and you have to wait for cloudless weather so your car is charged, then many will die. So you need diesel or some other fuel for emergency vehicles anyways. All the busses burning down by the dozens in Germany, those cars create lots of emergencies Sure, seems Elon moves to lifepo4 batteries, Learning curve, people will find out charging is not so simple. Think like Joerg I think he still has an old diesel?
