Intel Embeded Replacement

Hi,

March 2006, Intel annouced that they will stop production on most of its embeded processor by 2007 without any proposed migration path.

For years, my company, used Intel 80C188EB CPU in many design, and we are still doing it.

Most of our product are very low quantity, so it's not practical for us stock those parts for years in advance.

So we are now searching for a replacement. We lost hope of any direct fit, but that's not our major concern. We need to find something, low cost, low power & 5Vdc, easy to implement, preferably 8/16 bits, PLCC format, that can run I86 code, and will be avaliable in Canada in very low quantity, even in single unit, for at least the next 5 years. Something that can replace the

188EB and run our program, even if we have to rework the software a bit.

Any suggestions?

Bye

Why? Just buy what you need before it's phased out. Low volume is ideal for purchasing all the stock you will ever need. Worry about it in 10 years time when your stock runs out, or with any luck *your* product will be discontinued as well by then anyway and you'll never have a problem :->

Honestly, how long did people think they were going to keep building those.

Move to XScale :)

Intel dumped that, too.

AMD still sells AMD186 and AM188 devices, but all of them are marked as "not recommended for new designs". They also have the Geode chips which should live a bit longer. The other x86 player is VIA, but I guess they won't talk to you unless you sell at least thousand units a month.

Well, looks like it's time for you to leave x86 now.

Sold to Marvell, but I have assurances (I use the things) that they will be produced for at least the next 5 years. By that time, I will have left them (well, the ones I use now) behind.

Cheers

Hello David,

Chances are that any remaining stock might become a hot commodity by then. A wee hint about residual inventory and purchasing folks could be banging on the door. "Gimme some, puleeze!". Seriously, I have seen that happen.
