How do you design these days?

Dec 31, 2009 292 Replies

We had a Golden Retriever-Border Collie mix when I graduated from college and moved to NY (my mother couldn't handle it any longer). And we got a Golden in the '80s, when my son was young, and had it for 13 years. Ours were far darker than Spef's, though. We'd get another but it's difficult to travel when you have dogs. Cats are much easier to take care of. Food and water and they can be left alone for several days.

Might want to put a cover on it, or at least a Perspex plate if you want your product visible. Else ... boots, jackets, poles ... metal parts ... BZZZT.

Well, it looks neat already. Better than my floor heating controller :-) I planned to spin that into a real product but I didn't got to it yet. To busy with R&R.

Failure does not prove something is impossible, failure simply indicates you are not using the right tools... nico@nctdevpuntnl (punt=.) --------------------------------------------------------------

How dull your life would be without fireworks, though. ;)

Indeed! I haven't had a "fireworks" event since ~1980. ...Jim Thompson

That's because you are designing chips with your computation machine. Having your hands inside a unit with a monstrous transformer that let's off an evil TUNGGGG when turned on is a different ballgame :-)

(1) I don't go sticking my fingers where I can't see ;-)

(2) I designed discretes until around 1995, no flames.

(3) And no reports of flaming failures of systems with my chips, since

1980... and the 1980 event wasn't even a final chip, it was a breadboard... but it WAS a doozy ;-) ...Jim Thompson

No, there's a good 0.25" of snow on the ground at the moment. Even poor old Buffalo isn't buried for once (popped down last week to see the Penguins game- bargain prices, relatively speaking).

She's a gem- almost 9 y.o. now. Very good personality with kids. You have to be careful to get a reputable breeder- Goldens have a tendency to severe hip problems that can hit later in life. No puppy mills.

Kitten mills, OTOH:

Sometimes, man's got to do what man's got to do ...

Yeah, but probably no high voltage or power stuff.

Nothing like a nice big spark once in a while :-)

You've got a steadier hand than I'll ever have. I have to do it with a Dremel mounted in a drill press adapter, and slide the board against guides clamped to the bed. Even then ... :-(

I just finished working on a 10MW IGBT bridge 12x 3.3kV/1500A IGBT modules. We expected to have one set destroyed so that the customer stopped touting his idiotic non solution, but those damned IGBT are, ahem, rugged. Fortunately we finally saw the light (:-) and all is working as expected without even the slightest firework.

It's fun to see 1" dia cables jump due to 15kA pulses though, but the first time your psychological security distance is, well, somewhat laaaarge :-)

Thanks, Fred.

I wonder if Joerg demands at least one fire extinguisher in all his design contracts? :)

Or use the corners that would be wasted for small perfboards. You could end up with a nice selection over time. :)

expander),

it out.

Yes, no problem with spares, have a new LCD in the drawer, but since it moved from 100% embedded (8052 AH) to the PC it no longer needed it's own LCD display anyways. I just realized I still have that 8052 box, it has a 8049 EPROM programmer board too, Now that is a nice small BASIC programmable Harvard architecture system :-)

Yes, that requires muscle :-)

back to the LM135.

multi-tasking OS either.

100 C.

I have a similar problem with wall-warts... we need some better solution for that. That thing has a cover to protect it I hope?

Here is my old 8052AH BASIC computer that originally controlled everything: ftp://panteltje.com/pub/8052AH_BASIC_computer/8052AH_BASIC_computer_img_1725.jpg You can see the 8052AH chip with 'BASIC' written on it just visible next to the flat cable on the right: ftp://panteltje.com/pub/8052AH_BASIC_computer/8052AH_BASIC_computer_inside_img_1727.jpg The side slides out, you can then slide in this programmer board for the 8049 EPROM version: ftp://panteltje.com/pub/8052AH_BASIC_computer/8052AH_BASIC_computer_8049_programmer_board_img_1731.jpg It has collected a lot of dust, not used for so many years. On the rear the DIN connector is i2c (external) to all the I/O, there are 2 RS232 connectors, a power connector, and some extra I/O directly from the 8052 AH pins. ftp://panteltje.com/pub/8052AH_BASIC_computer/8052AH_BASIC_computer_rear_img_1728.jpg I wonder if the NICAD (the big yellow thing) is dead after 25 years of no use.... It is for SRAM backup. You can also see the pot core for the EPROM programmer voltage generator. The whole thing runs on a 12 V DC adaptor. May even try it some day, it should just work with the current system, it still uses the DIN 5 pole to connect to a cable that connects to the PC. Computers have something eternal...
