Help with daughter!

Well, when I was going to high school (last ice age... 8-) ) I just graduated a year early. However, if I hadn't graduated early, I would have just taken some additional courses for fun, such as chorus or speech, or even typing. I didn't get a chance to try out the shop classes, although I did get mechanical drawing in.

Of course, there are also classes like PE or ROTC that can help pass the time pleasantly!

Yep. I raised two daughters (and two sons), no particular sweat. I did have a couple of occasions where each daughter called and had me retrieve her from a date going bad.

(And I like that Bill Engvall schtick where he tells the lad about to take his daughter out on a date, don't make her cry, "I have no problem going _back_ to prison." ;-)

I did follow discretely behind all four kids on their first solo "flight" driving a car.

And I have more tales about the sons' adventures than would fill several books, but I'll leave those until someone asks about raising sons ;-)

Friday night just happens to be shotgun cleaning night (Saturday is pistols). A little chat before the date...

I didn't. My wife lost her driving privileges (medical) and I needed him to help schlep her back and forth to work. He was already 18 and I had to force him to get his license. His only accident was when he was T-boned at a stop sign (the other guy's) in a Mall parking lot. I made out like a bandit on that one. ;-)

At least they're cheap(er).

I went to junior high in the city where Industrial Arts was offered. (I took it.) My high school was out in the bookdocks and what was offered there was called Agriculture. (I didn't take that.)

The suggestions for microcontroller kits sound like a cook idea to me--but that depends a lot on the gal.

...and Joerg's "have a long chat with her" advice (about her *interests*) seems most apt.

I kid around with the wife that the only reason the two sons made it to age 21 was, if the wife was mad at them, I was laughing, and vice versa.

Of course, between the two of them, they totaled three Z-cars and one Mustang ;-)

Well, as long as she figures it out before college, not years later. Some kids are in school forever and ever. I couldn't wait to get out. They tried to convince me to head towards Ph.D. but I just took my masters and headed off into industry where I wanted to be.

Then why did you say "NO!" to the "Senior Free" thingie? Haven't outgrown that iron fist yet?

Don't trust her?

Tell her yes, but with conditions. Sit down with her and actually work out a set of rules, and the concomitant punishements if she breaks any.

Most importantly, Listen to her side of the story. Actually Listen, rather than just sitting and waiting for the noise to stop.

I'm 1,000% with Jim.

She's gotten--and will get--lots of academic experience. Any sort of real-world grounding, especially a job, even a menial job, will teach her volumes about how the world works, how regular people live, and what her choices are. Such knowledge will serve her in good stead, lifelong.

She sounds like a gem.

There's nothing wrong with some real life experience, even in a job not destined to be a career. For someone destined to spend the rest of their life in an intellectual career, doing something different could be good experience.

Contact the U of F and see what sort of programs they have. Or even the local community college.

Consider yourself lucky. With most of he girls I knew in H.S., their parents greatest concern was how to keep them off the brass pole.

If academic advising at U of F cant help you, call the Dean or VP for Research. They can usually find a slot with a researcher who could use some help.

The connections made, and the look at a career she may or may not want to enter, are priceless. Besides, if she can learn to cope with academics, she can work for anybody.

Academics fight for good interns.

A while ago I bought 2 very good books on math: 'modern engineering mathematics' and 'advanced modern engineering mathematics'. The first book simply starts with 2+3=5 and handles all the other math subjects that way. Starting with simple examples and work towards more complicated stuff. Loads of real world electrical and mechanical engineering problems are used as an example.

Same here. I think I planned my electrical engineering education carreer when I was about 12 or so. But I know I'm just one of the very few.
