Gluing to silicone rubber

I have the need to glue a flexible silicone rubber gasket used in kitchen plumbing applications to a plastic jar top for a small vacuum project.

I tried all kinds of glues, including hot glue. Nothing would stick. Everything simply peeled off.

Searching google, I found a post where someone recommended superglue, the cyanoacrylate adhesive girls use to glue their fingernails on.

It works like a charm! It is impossible to remove it from the silicone rubber when it dries. It really bonds well.

Now, if it will stick to the plastic, I'm all set!

A technique is to take a hot torch and flash it over the surface quickly to scorch the surface to be glued. When all else fails this can work, even with teflon or polyethylene.

I've never heard of the superglue gluing silicone, and it's hard to believe.

I accidentally spilled some DOW 3140 on a silicone cooking pad that I use for soldering. When I tried to peel it off it ripped out a divot of silicone.

Probably your cook surface was oxidized. How does 3140 compare to the stuff in the hardware stores? Is there a low viscosity version? (how does viscosity compare?)

I'm still wondering why you don't let the silicone do the gluing, ie apply it uncured.

Whether it will stick depends on the type of plastic. If you do some searc hes on bonding silicone rubber surface temperature, you will probably learn more than you want about bonding silicone rubber. Cured silicone rubber a nd most plastics have low surface energy, which makes bonding difficult. You can treat the surface with plasma which will get rid of contaminants an d also raise the surface energy. You can make plasma by taking the output of a neon sign transformer to a couple of wires that are close.

You might also try uncured silicon rubber as the adhesive.
