What is involved with designing a fuel mileage meter to plug into the diagnostic connector of a car? It's a newer, OBD-II compliant vehicle. I understand that there are different hardware protocols; KW2000, CAN, etc but they are all OBD-II compliant. I have no problem designing things with microcontrollers, LCDs, and support logic, but don't know what else I'm dealing with. There are commercially available meters, but they seem really expensive. Besides, I'm a do-it-yourself kind of guy if it's feasible.

Mark your guage scale in dollars per mile. I'll nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize.
scangauge.com is a commercial mpg meter. There is an article on how to build one in the Circuit Cellar design contest entries
This is included in most "trip computer" equipped cars but you do have to do the math to get from MPG to cents per mile. $3 gas works out to 10 cents a mile @ 30MPG so you can easily work backward from that on your fingers..
