But being someone that used to do mirror finish surface quality polish jobs, I think I can easily and reliably state that Bill Sloman thinks he is the only one around that knows manufacturing processes. When the facts of the matter is that he is a punk and denigrates others in nearly every response he has ever given in this group.

Decidedly, since there are rough cores and cores with optical quality surface treatments, it would appear that Bill is a bit off the mark in his vageries.

Some parts of the industries that you are familiar may do it.

If you are relying on a bolt to retain a part in a vibrating environment, you'd need to throw in a star washer or a spring washer to stop the nut walking off the bolt.

If you've got enough vibration to break solder joints you'd need that to keep something bolted down.

Where I come from milling, is a different kind of operation from grinding.

If you put a grinding head into a milling machine, it's still doing a grinding operation.

Confusing grinding and milling is a pretty basic mistake.

The fact that grinding down only the centre of the core half is an extra operation is enough to make them more expensive.

Gapped cores are made by grinding down the centre post in an ungapped core.

They have to be more expensive.

It sounds a bit as if it's an off-the-shelf transformer, but that hasn't been specified.

Probably isn't. Varnishing makes sense for commodity transformers because you don't know where they will end up being used. Phil's kinds of products end up in pretty benign environments.

I mean the PD bias, i.e. the output of the regulator. The three-transistor amp I'm using also works like a cap multiplier, which gets the 1-Hz noise down into the sub-nanovolt range above 10 kHz or so.

It's described as the magnetic analog of resistance, and has been around for a very long time - it never struck me as a particularly useful idea. Lots of stuff about transformrer design does seem to be really badly taught.
